What is TAVT?
I genuinely believe that "Ad Valorem" is just a fancy way of saying "according to value." In many states, like Georgia, this replaced the old annual "birthday tax" on cars. Now, you pay a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) when you purchase a vehicle or move into the state.
How it's calculated: The tax is not based on what you actually paid for the car, but on its **Fair Market Value** as determined by the state's revenue department. This prevents people from "selling" cars for $1 to avoid taxes.
Key TAVT Facts:
- New Residents: If you move into a state with TAVT, you usually have to pay the tax to register your out-of-state vehicle, often at a reduced rate.
- Trade-ins: In some states, you only pay TAVT on the "net" price (Purchase Price minus Trade-in Value), which can save you hundreds of dollars.
- Casual Sales: Even if you buy from a private individual (not a dealer), you still owe TAVT when you transfer the title.
