What is "Aida Count"?

I genuinely believe that the "Aida Count" is the most confusing thing for beginners. It simply means how many squares (and thus, how many stitches) fit into one linear inch of fabric. A 14 count Aida means 14 stitches per inch. The higher the number, the smaller and more detailed your work will be.

Don't forget margins: If your design is exactly 10 inches wide, you don't buy 10 inches of fabric. You need extra room for the hoop, for the frame, and so the fabric doesn't fray into your art. I always recommend at least 3 inches of "buffer" on every side.

Fabric Tips:

  • 14 Count: The gold standard. Perfect for beginners and most patterns.
  • 18 Count: Used for higher detail and realistic portraits.
  • Fraying: If you're working on a big project, tape the edges of your Aida with masking tape to stop them from unraveling.
