Alcohol dilution calculator
Whether you're making home-made gin, limoncello, or just diluting high-proof "heart" from a distil, getting the water ratio right is everything.
Resulting in 2375ml of 40% spirits.
Dilute with distilled water
I cannot stress this enough: don't use tap water. If you spent weeks fermenting and distilling a beautiful batch of spirits, the last thing you want is for it to turn "cloudy" (known as louching) because of the minerals in your tap water. Buy a gallon of distilled or high-quality spring water.
The chemistry of mixing
When you mix alcohol and water, something weird happens: the total volume is actually slightly less than the sum of the parts. This is because the molecules nestle into each other’s gaps. This calculator uses the standard Pearson's Square logic, which is more than accurate enough for home blending.
Flavor Tip: If you're diluting a gin or flavored spirit, add the water slowly. Adding it all at once can "shock" the oils and cause them to separate, ruining that crystal-clear look.
