What does this risk mean?

I genuinely believe that the ASCVD score is one of the most important numbers for anyone over 40. It doesn't just look at one factor like "high cholesterol"—it looks at how all your factors work together. A score of 7.5% means that if we had 100 people exactly like you, about 7 or 8 of them would have a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years.

Treatment Thresholds: In the US, clinical guidelines often recommend starting a statin (cholesterol medication) if your 10-year risk is above 7.5%. However, this is a conversation you must have with your doctor, as they will also look at your "lifetime risk" and other health factors.

Ways to lower your risk:

  • Stop Smoking: This is often the single most effective way to drop your score immediately.
  • Lower SBP: Every 10 mmHg drop in systolic blood pressure significantly reduces stroke risk.
  • Healthy Diet: Reducing trans fats and increasing fiber helps stabilize cholesterol levels.
