Understanding your BAH
I genuinely believe that the BAH is the most important "hidden" benefit of military service. It’s designed to provide service members with equitable housing compensation based on local market rental costs. Crucially, BAH is **non-taxable**, which significantly increases its effective value compared to a civilian salary.
How BAH is set: The Department of Defense (DoD) surveys over 300 military housing areas every year. They look at the cost of rent and utilities for several types of housing (apartments, townhomes, single-family homes) to determine the rates for each rank.
BAH Strategies:
- Live for Free: Many service members choose to rent for less than their BAH rate and pocket the difference (tax-free!).
- Buy a Home: You can use your BAH to cover a mortgage payment, building equity while you serve.
- On-Post Housing: If you live in privatized military housing, your entire BAH is usually forfeited to cover the rent and utilities.
