Understanding the Odds

I genuinely believe that betting without knowing the implied probability is just guessing. If a sportsbook gives you odds of -110, they are saying that team has a 52.4% chance of winning. If you think their actual chance is 60%, that's a "value bet." If you think it's 50%, you're giving money to the house.

American Odds (+/-): Positive numbers (+) tell you how much profit you'd make on a $100 bet. Negative numbers (-) tell you how much you need to bet to make $100 in profit.

Odds Types:

  • Decimal: Common in Europe and Canada. Total Payout = Stake × Decimal.
  • Fractional: Common in the UK. 5/1 means you win $5 for every $1 bet.
  • Implied Probability: The percentage chance the "odds" represent before the bookie takes their cut (the vigorish).
