How KDP Royalties Work
I genuinely believe that Amazon's "70% royalty" is a bit of a marketing trick. It sounds great, but they still charge you "delivery fees" for Kindle books based on file size. For paperbacks, the math gets even more complex because you have to subtract a fixed charge plus a per-page printing fee before you even see a dime.
Ebook Delivery Fees: Amazon charges $0.15 per megabyte for books in the 70% plan. If you have a lot of images, your "70%" can quickly drop to 60%.
Paperback Printing:
- Fixed Charge: $0.85 (Standard) or $2.15 (Large).
- Per Page: Usually around $0.012 for black ink.
- Standard Plan: You get 60% of the list price minus printing costs.
