Coffee ratio calculator

The secret to great coffee is consistency. Calculate the exact grams of coffee and water you need for any brew method.

1 : parts water
Coffee 20g
Water 340ml

The SCA says 1:18, but I disagree

The "official" Golden Ratio is 1:18 (1g coffee to 18g water). But if I'm being honest, for most people that's a bit thin and watery. If you want a cup that actually has some character and wakes you up, try 1:15 or 1:16. For an everyday brew, that's usually the sweet spot.

And please, ditch the scoops and buy a cheap kitchen scale. Coffee beans are all different sizes and densities — a scoop of a dark roast weighs much less than a scoop of light roast. You need grams, not spoons, if you want your coffee to taste exactly the same every morning.

Standard Brew Ratios

If you're not sure where to start, here are the ratios I usually go with for different gear:

  • French Press: 1:15 (Rich and full)
  • Pour Over: 1:16 or 1:17 (Bright and clean)
  • AeroPress: 1:13 to 1:15 (Versatile)
  • Espresso: 1:2 (Intense concentrate)
