The "rule of 7" is dead
I genuinely hate the "multiply by 7" rule. It’s lazy and scientifically wrong. Dogs age much faster in their first two years then they do later in life, and tiny Chihuahuas live nearly twice as long as Great Danes. My old lab was "84" by that logic when he was actually acting like a energetic teenager.
The math I've used here is based on more recent veterinary data. Basically, the first year for any dog is roughly 15 human years. Then it depends on size. Large breeds might reach "senior" status at age 6, while smaller dogs are still in their prime at age 10.
How aging varies by size:
- Small pups: They reach adulthood fast but age very slowly after that.
- Giant breeds: They take longer to fully grow but hit senior years much earlier — sometimes by age 5 or 6.
