Finishing the Job

I genuinely believe that the secret to a perfect wall is in the "Mudding" (joint compound). While calculating sheets is easy, estimating the finishing materials is where most DIYers get stuck. For every **1,000 square feet** of drywall, you typically need about **140 pounds** of joint compound and **375 feet** of joint tape.

Sheet Size Choice: 4x8 sheets are standard and easier for one person to handle. However, 4x12 sheets are better for large rooms or high ceilings because they create fewer seams (butt joints), which results in a smoother finish and less work during the sanding phase.

Material Estimates:

  • Screws: You need about 1 pound of drywall screws for every 500 square feet of board.
  • Mud (Compound): Estimate 0.05 gallons per square foot for three coats.
  • Corners: Don't forget to buy corner beads for every outside corner in your room.
