The "CPP" Rule
I genuinely believe that "Cents Per Point" is the only metric that matters for travel hackers. It’s simple: (Cash Price - Fees) / Number of Points. If your calculated value is higher than the average for that program, you're getting a "deal." If it's lower, you're better off paying cash and saving your points for a more expensive stay later.
Resort Fees: One major benefit of booking with points at Hilton or Hyatt is that they often waive the resort fees (which can be $50+ per night). Always include these in your "Cash Price" to get an accurate comparison!
Average Point Values:
- Hyatt: The king of value. Often 1.5 to 2.0 cents per point.
- Marriott Bonvoy: Generally 0.7 to 0.9 cents.
- Hilton Honors: Generally 0.4 to 0.6 cents.
- IHG: Generally 0.5 to 0.7 cents.
