Know your rights (FLSA)
I genuinely believe that your time is your most valuable asset. In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that most employees receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek. The minimum overtime rate is **1.5 times** your regular hourly pay.
Common Pay Rules:
- Time and a Half (1.5x): The standard rate for any work exceeding the normal 40-hour limit.
- Double Time (2.0x): Not legally required by federal law, but often part of union contracts or company policy for work on holidays or after 12 consecutive hours in a day.
- Exempt vs Non-Exempt: Some salaried employees are "exempt" from overtime pay, but many hourly and lower-salaried workers are "non-exempt" and must be paid for every extra minute.
Note: Always check your local state laws, as states like California have more protective overtime rules (such as daily overtime after 8 hours).
