Reptile Tank Size Estimator
Don't cramp their style. Calculate the minimum recommended enclosure size for your scaly friend based on their species and age.
Dimensions: 48" x 24" x 24" recommended.
Is your tank big enough?
I genuinely believe that the "minimum" sizes you see in pet stores are often way too small. A bearded dragon in a 40-gallon tank is like a human living in a walk-in closet. They can survive, but they won't thrive. The modern standard for an adult dragon is 120 gallons, providing enough space for a proper thermal gradient (hot side vs cool side).
Vertical vs Horizontal: Some reptiles are arboreal (climbers), like Crested Geckos, and they need tall tanks. Others are terrestrial (ground-dwellers) and need floor space. Make sure you match the shape of the enclosure to your pet's natural behavior!
Common Tank Dimensions:
- 40 Gallon Breeder: 36" x 18" x 18"
- 120 Gallon: 48" x 24" x 24"
- 20 Gallon Tall: 18" x 18" x 24" (Great for Crested Geckos)
