Why is FOV so important?

I genuinely believe that "Correct FOV" is the single biggest advantage you can give yourself in sim racing. When your FOV is wrong, your brain has to work harder to judge distances and corner entry speeds. When it's right, everything feels natural—the apex is exactly where your eyes expect it to be.

The "Tunnel Vision" Myth: Many beginners think a higher FOV is better because they can "see more." But a high FOV distorts the image (the fisheye effect), making speed harder to judge. It's better to have a lower, mathematically correct FOV and rely on your mirrors or "spotter" for awareness.

Rig Setup Tips:

  • Get Closer: The closer the monitor is to your eyes, the higher your "correct" FOV can be.
  • Triple Monitors: If you use triples, the angle between the side monitors matters. This calculator assumes a flat setup; adjust slightly for curved mounts.
  • Consistency: Once you find your correct FOV, stick with it across all sims (iRacing, ACC, etc.).
