Understanding your Paycheck

I genuinely believe that understanding your net pay is the foundation of financial health. Most people discuss their salary in "Gross" terms, but you only ever see the "Net." The gap between the two is consumed by three primary forces: the IRS (Federal), your state government, and Social Security/Medicare (FICA).

Filing Status Matters: Whether you file as Single or Married/Jointly changes your Standard Deduction. This is the amount of income you don't have to pay federal tax on at all. For 2024/2025, this is a significant portion of your income.

The Big Three Deductions:

  • Federal Tax: A progressive system where higher slices of your income are taxed at higher percentages (10% to 37%).
  • FICA: A flat 7.65% for most employees (6.2% for Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare).
  • State Tax: Varies wildly. Nine states have no income tax, while others can take over 10% of your top earnings.
