Towing Safety 101
I genuinely believe that towing is the most dangerous thing you can do with a vehicle if you don't know your numbers. Just because your truck's brochure says "tows 10,000 lbs" doesn't mean *your* specific truck can do it once you've loaded it with cargo, a heavy bed liner, and five passengers.
The 80% Rule: Experienced RVers often suggest never towing more than 80% of your maximum capacity. This provides a safety buffer for steep hills, strong winds, and emergency braking situations. It also puts less strain on your transmission and cooling system.
Key Terms:
- GVWR: The max weight your vehicle can be, including itself, passengers, and cargo.
- GCWR: The max weight of the *entire* setup (Vehicle + Trailer + everything inside both).
- Tongue Weight: The amount of the trailer's weight that presses down on the hitch. Should be 10-15% of the total trailer weight.
