Safety Note: Keep the turkey in its original wrapper. If using cold water, change the water every 30 minutes.

Safe Thawing Guidelines

I genuinely believe that food safety is the most important ingredient in any holiday meal. Bacteria can grow rapidly in the "Danger Zone" (40°F - 140°F), so you should **never** thaw a turkey on the counter or in the garage. Our calculator provides the two USDA-approved methods for safe defrosting.

Refrigerator Method (Recommended): This is the most consistent and safest way. It takes approximately **24 hours for every 4-5 pounds** of turkey. Once thawed, a turkey can stay in the fridge for another 1-2 days before cooking.

Cold Water Method: If you're short on time, this method takes about **30 minutes per pound**. You must keep the turkey in a leak-proof plastic bag and submerge it in cold tap water. You **must** cook the turkey immediately after it is thawed using this method.

Expert Holiday Tips:

  • The Roasting Pan: Place your turkey in a roasting pan while it thaws in the fridge to catch any drips and prevent cross-contamination.
  • Don't Wash: There is no need to wash your turkey before cooking. Washing can actually spread bacteria around your kitchen sink and counters.
  • Thermometer: The only way to know a turkey is done is to check the internal temperature. It must reach 165°F in the thickest part of the breast and thigh.
