How VA Disability is Calculated

Once you have a rating of 30% or higher, you can receive additional compensation for dependents (spouse, children, and dependent parents).

COLA Adjustments: Every year, the VA adjusts benefit rates based on the Social Security Administration's Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA). This ensures your buying power stays stable even as prices rise.

Dependency Ratios (at 100%):

  • Spouse: Adds approx $200 - $300 to your base pay.
  • Child: Adds approx $100 - $150 per child under age 18.
  • Special Allowances: SMC (Special Monthly Compensation) may be available for severe disabilities like loss of limb or blindness.
