Why estimate yarn?

I genuinely believe that "yarn chicken" is the most stressful part of crafting. Nothing is worse than getting 90% done with a sweater only to realize you're out of yarn and the dye lot is sold out. Our calculator gives you a safe buffer based on industry averages for different weights of yarn (Fingering to Bulky).

Dye Lots Matter: Always buy one extra skein! Even if the color looks the same, different dye lots can have subtle shifts that will show up as a line in your finished work.

General Guide by Yarn Weight:

  • Fingering/Sock: More yardage per skein, but requires more for the same area.
  • Worsted: The gold standard for sweaters and hats.
  • Bulky: Works up fast, but you'll need many more skeins because the yardage per skein is low.
